The prevalence of Chlamydiaceae
was investigated in Belgium in 258 breeding farms distributed
in the four major swine production areas. For each of these
farms, an indirect ELISA was performed on a pool of blood
samples from 5 sows between 8 and 20 months of age. In addition,
tissue samples were collected from 23 necropsied pigs and
tested for the presence of Chlamydiaceae by direct immunofluorescence
staining and PCR. This investigation demonstrates clearly
that chlamydial infection is endemic in Belgian pigs. However,
the actual impact of such an endemic situation on pig health
is still unclear.
